Quick Tip of the Week: Insert Punctuation More Quickly With iPhone Keyboard

To add punctuation to text, most iPhone users will pause typing, press the “123″ key to see the numerical and symbolic options, tap the symbol (or number) they want, and then hit the “ABC” menu to return to the alpha keyboard.

If you’re still adding in symbols and numbers this way, then boy, do we have a treat for you. This will take a teeny bit of getting used to, but from now on, the next time you want to add punctuation, pause typing, press and hold the “123″ key, then without removing your finger (or thumb!) from the screen, slide it over to land on what you want to insert.

As you release your digit from the display, the symbol will have been entered into your text and you’ll be back on the alpha keyboard.

Being an avid Blackberry user long before the iPhone existed, I was apprehensive about making the switch. But, after weeks of deliberation, and much persuasion from some friends, I ordered my first iPhone 4.

After anxiously waiting three weeks for my new toy, it arrived. I was like a little kid on Christmas – my own Christmas in July.

Right away, I was addicted to the speed of the phone. Its processor is far superior to any Blackberry – wi-fi and 3G. Here are some other things I liked immediately:
 The app store. At first glance, it’s a little overwhelming, but there is literally an app for everything. I can reserve movies at Redbox, DEPOSIT A CHECK, and burn ants with a magnifying glass, all from my phone!
 The iPhone can replace my digital camera. Who knew a phone could take as good a picture?
 Did I mention that I have my own little bank teller in my phone? Amazing.
 Words with friends – I’m already an addict. I seriously have about 14 games going on at this moment. Look for me – rgcatou.
 The zoom function makes reading web pages and e-mails so much easier. I can switch from Perez Hilton to the NY Times in seconds!

I’m still trying to figure out everything, but so far, here are the few things I don’t like about the iPhone (or just haven’t figured them out yet):
 My friends’ birthdays don’t sync with my iPhone calendar. They did with my Blackberry and I never missed one. I’m going to apologize now if I miss yours.
 I’m still trying to figure out where my music is… I update my iTunes and everything disappeared. Luckily, I have backups – somewhere in the room I call an office.
 The battery SUCKS! I don’t know if I’m over-using the new phone, or it just can’t hold a charge… I could go days on the Blackberry without recharging. A few days ago, I was running frantically around the office trying to find someone with a charger. It’s like being cut off from the world with no phone! I broke down and bought a charger for the office that night.
 I can’t find a good Twitter app. None of the ones I have tested have push notifications or refresh at scheduled intervals. I’ll admit it – sometimes I forget to check it without reminders.

I’m sure everyone has heard about the hoopla about the bad reception, but I can honestly say I have not noticed any difference from my Blackberry. Actually, I think the reception may have gotten better when I’m in my house. I’m still waiting on my free case from Apple though!

Just like anything, switching from something familiar will mean change. Some changes are good, some are bad, and some are eh. Although I said I never would make the change, I did, and I’m not going back. Bu-bye Blackberry!
