The Importance of Communication in Recruitment

Gil Rogers from the University of New Haven, who was our most recent guest author, posted on his own blog yesterday on a very interesting topic: Open Communication…Good or Bad? In this blog, he points out how easy it has become for students to contact admissions representatives. He goes on to wonder if this is a good or a bad thing, and finally decides that to him it is a good thing.

I agree. I think that it is very important for students to be able to contact admissions representatives through multiple media. With the array of social media out there, from email to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and more, students can find almost anyone with whom they wish to speak. I am glad this is happening. When I was choosing a college, the only way to get ahold of anyone at my prospective schools was by phone, and sometimes email. If I had been able to send them a Facebook message or DM on Twitter, my college choice could have been very different.

My point is that, students are committing 4 (or more) years of their lives to your university or college. The best thing you could do is have as many open lines of communication as possible, in order to ensure that your school is the best fit for the students - in turn, benefitting both the student and the school.

What media do you use for students to be able to contact you? What medium is your favorite?
